Duncan Mathewson RIBA  Director

Lambourn Office - Founding Partner of Mathewson Waters Architects

Profile and Experience

Duncan established the practice in 1983 as a sole practitioner based in Lambourn West Berkshire, and this rapidly developed into a partnership with a move to our current offices in 1987.  With more than 30 years experience as a Chartered Architect he has also presented seminars to Local Planning Authorities and Home Building Exhibitions.

Since the outset, all MWA’s work has been bespoke, whether commercial or domestic, large or small, highly detailed or simple – the final building is individual to each of our clients.  His personal approach has meant developing good relations with clients as well as a network of associated professionals involved in producing a building.

MWA’s particular reputation for planning success is built on this approach: design skills, experience and well presented submissions that work.

His special strength is in high quality individual houses, extensions & refurbishments including restoration of historic and listed buildings, often in countryside locations. Another unique area of specialisation is in developing new or existing equine establishments, often encompassing the trainer’s own house.

Howard Waters RIBA  Director

Mathewson Waters Architects, Devizes

Profile & Recent Experience:

My professional work within the practice between 1988 and the present, has involved mainly domestic projects for private and professional clients.  A significant proportion of those projects has involved commissions relating to Grade II listed buildings or sites and buildings within conservation areas.

A   Masters qualification (MSc Conservation of Historic Buildings), from The University of Bath. Gained  in 2003 has provided me with the necessary  expertise and confidence to advise clients on the appropriate approach to  repairing, altering or extending a listed building. In particular the importance of assessing the significance of a heritage asset and its setting has become paramount in my approach to heritage projects and which provides a sound basis from which to develop the project in an appropriate and sensitive  manner.

2010-present:     Governor of The Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust.

Philip has provided a wealth of experience within the specialist equine sector being involved with many of MWA equestrian schemes both locally and  nationally.

"Much of my work is centered about delivering ‘buildability’ to schemes, achieving tight deadlines and budgets in both the large residential and private education sectors.

Working closely with clients, often from the planning stage onwards, I work to  deliver the scheme balancing budget against aspiration and producing  detailed information packages for competitive tender.

This practical experienced is balanced by my contractual knowledge and legal expertise, which is beneficial in ensuring a smooth build on site and ensuring the clients project is delivered satisfactorily."
