ABOUT US

Fulfilling people’s dreams by creating amazing environments.

We create amazing bespoke environments for happy clients, with major emphasis on quality of life for all end users. Mathewson Waters Architects (MWA), is a well established RIBA chartered architectural practice founded in 1983. We have over 40 years’ experience of working across a range of business sectors including residential, equine, leisure, and education. We are passionate about good design and careful customer service ensuring that our clients receive the highest level of architectural design they have come to expect. We work on projects with difficult planning situations where there has often been negative previous planning history on the site from previously appointed consultants. Cost is not often the driving force on the projects although budgetary restraint can be.

People are always at the heart of the spaces we create and is reflected in the continued numbers of referrals from past and present clients, accounting for majority of new projects within the office. We always meet perspective clients and visit the site before issuing any fee proposal. This reinforces the personal approach and take care attention to detail we offer which reflects through into the work we can then produce for them. It’s a personal service for people.

Our communication and approachability on a personal level is excellent. With our drawn communication generally considered to be far superior to many both in clarity and content. The use of 3D computer and manually hand drawn presentations assists clients with comprehension and the selling of the scheme. The technical information we produce is based upon considerable experience and many years of working within an ever-changing industry with its current evolution towards sustainability and eco-viability. Our ability to adapt and to negotiate with the planning systems that are always being modified and changed has allowed us to work within what can be considered marginal sites for development.

WHO WE ARE

Howard Waters, RIBA

Mathewson Waters Architects: Devizes, Wiltshire

Profile and Experience
My professional work within the practice between 1988 and the present, has involved mainly domestic projects for private and professional clients. A significant proportion of those projects have involved commissions relating to Grade II listed buildings or sites and buildings within conservation areas.”

Howard gained a Masters qualification (MSc Conservation of Historic Buildings), from The University of Bath in 2003.
“The degree provided me with the necessary expertise and confidence to advise clients on the appropriate approach to repairing, altering or extending a listed building. The importance of assessing the significance of a heritage asset and its setting has become paramount in my approach to heritage projects, this gives me a sound basis from which to develop the project in an appropriate and sensitive  manner.”

Duncan Mathewson - Founding Partner of Mathewson Waters Architects

Duncan established the practice in 1983 as a sole practitioner based in Lambourn, West Berkshire. This rapidly developed into a partnership with a move to our current offices in 1987. With more than 30 years’ experience as a Chartered Architect he has also presented seminars to Local Planning Authorities and Home Building Exhibitions. Since the outset, all MWA’s work has been bespoke, whether commercial or domestic, large or small, highly detailed or simple – the final building is individual to each of our clients.

"Our approach is based on the requirements of our client. This drives creative solutions and design priorities to produce a result that takes best advantage of views, site orientation, future change and general ambience."

WHERE WE WORK

WORKING WITHIN THE NORTH WESSEX AONB

"Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are some of the most beautiful and cherished landscapes in Britain. They are designated as special landscapes which provide a range of benefits for people and wildlife. The primary purpose of AONB designation is to conserve and enhance that natural beauty. The North Wessex Downs AONB is located in the south of England, in an area covering 668 sq miles between Reading and Swindon to the East and North, and Andover and Devizes to the South and West."

Mathewson Waters is based within the North Wessex AONB where development is strictly controlled, even to the extent that extensions to dwellings in the countryside attract significant scrutiny.

We have worked within the AONB for over 35 years, our design and planning expertise has achieved considerable success, including the construction of replacement dwellings, and on occasion, new dwellings, particularly in relation to racehorse training establishments and for agricultural workers. With the introduction in the planning system of Permitted Development under a Prior Notification, there now exists the opportunity, even in the AONB,  to change the use of redundant agricultural buildings.

With partners based in Whitchurch, Abingdon and Devizes, all centring in our main office in Lambourn, our client and project base extends through and past the North Wessex AOAB
