SHELTERED HOUSING FOR CHARITY

Sheltered Specialist Housing for injured jockeys charity. Based in Lambourn Berkshire, Berkshire architects.

Where: Lambourn, Berkshire

Our client is a charity which provides long-term support and sheltered housing for former jockeys and their partners. This project was aimed at providing important facilities and accommodation for those in the Berkshire, Oxfordshire  & Wiltshire areas.

A Multi-purpose building providing facilities and support services for former and current Jockeys. Incorporating meeting spaces, therapy rooms and social facilities; Also with self-contained and assisted-living dwellings located to the rear of the building.

The client wanted Oaksey House to act as a ‘beacon’ for the work of the charity and to provide modern facilities and comfortable accommodation that would have both a public face and a discrete private and calming atmosphere.

A site in the heart of the racing community became available. It was large enough to accommodate 12 self-contained apartments and a substantial main building which includes management, entertainment and gym/therapy facilities.

ADVICE FROM OUR ARCHITECTS | COMMON ARCHITECTURAL QUESTIONS

What does an architect do on first visit?

On a first visit, the architect would have an open discussion about the client’s aspirations for the project and to identify key limitations so as to manage the client’s expectations.
A walk-round of the building and site would take place whilst discussing accommodation, budget and the orientation of the site....aspect & prospect.
