THATCHED COTTAGE EXTENSION AND REFURBISHMENT PROJECT

Where: Woolhampton, Berkshire

The client purchased a pair of semi-derelict listed properties with a view to developing them into two, two bedroom cosy character cottages to suit modern lifestyles.

Being listed didn’t limit the opportunity to extend the properties at the back, but the extensions had to be undertaken in a sympathetic way that respected the old timber framed structures. This project entailed a combination of repair and replacement in full consultation with the conservation department of the local authority.

There is often a planning requirement to ensure that the historic old building is clearly ‘readable’ when being extended. The selection of traditional materials and blending of the old and new achieved two very comfortable and saleable properties.
