GRADE II LISTED MILL CONVERSION

Where: Wantage

This Mill is Grade II listed and had been converted to a multiple occupancy dwelling without any planning or listed building consent when our clients purchased it.  MWA were able to speak with a senior planning officer who having reviewed brief note with photographs agreed to allow a contractor to strip out all the internal partitions whilst detailed drawings were prepared.

Planning and Listed Building applications were submitted for the conversion of the building to a single dwelling and quickly processed to allow work to continue on site.  In view of the very large volume of the main element, the LA allowed the installation of freestanding insulated linings to the external walls on the basis that they did not impact the structure and could be removed to reveal the original facing brickwork.

The water wheel was retained since and given ‘pride of place‘ in the lower ground floor kitchen/breakfast room.  This project was illustrated in a couple of national magazines and appeared on television's ‘through the keyhole!’

Subsequently, a detached two-bedroom annexe was added being an oak frame construction by Carpenter Oak.
